South Dakota Aerial & Arts is thrilled to host the 2nd Annual Dakota Aerial Championship this upcoming weekend. Since its inaugural competition last year (2023), the championship has exploded in popularity, expanding from 36 performances and 10 studios to an impressive 122 performances - a staggering 239% increase- with participation from 21 studios across the nation.
In just one year, the Dakota Aerial Championship has emerged as the largest aerial competition in South Dakota, attracting talent from both in-person and virtual competitors. This year's event promises to be a celebration of skill, artistry, and community, featuring a diverse range of performances that highlight the creativity and dedication of aerial artists.
"We are thrilled to see such tremendous growth in just our second year," said Katie Critzer, Co-owner of South Dakota Aerial & Arts. "I've competed in many competition myself, and being able to bring the aerial community together in Sioux Falls at our beautiful studio is so exciting; the enthusiasm from performers and studios nationwide is a testament to the passion for aerial arts in our community and our hard work. We're excited to provide an event where these talented performers can shine, learn and come together."
The Dakota Aerial Championship will feature competitors across various levels and disciplines - including aerial silks, hammock, lyra (aerial hoop) and specialty performances, offering a unique opportunity to witness breathtaking performances that combine athleticism and artistry. Performers range from 5 years to 40+ (we promised we wouldn't share their exact age ;)).
"Watching our students prepare for this competition and the hard work, tenacity and creativity they have is so heartwarming to see; it is truly a gift." said Ashley Premer, Co-owner of South Dakota Aerial & Arts. "We are happy to offer a competition close to home that is accessible to individuals ranging from first time competitors to seasoned athletes. It is going to be an incredible competition!"
The event will take place November 8-10, 2024, at the South Dakota Aerial and Arts studio, and will include both live and virtual competitors.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday expert aerial workshops will be hosted by coaches from across the U.S. Workshops will focus on a variety of topics like lyra rolls, aerial drops, spin technique and unique mounts and dismounts. "Being able to bring in experts to share their knowledge is so valuable to our students and competitors. Oftentimes you have to travel far and pay high prices for expert aerial instruction." says Critzer. "We hope all of our competitors and our students take away valuable skills from this weekend!"
Join us as we celebrate the evolution of aerial arts in South Dakota and recognize the incredible talent that this competition brings. Don't miss the chance to experience this exhilarating event!
